'Lost' exclusive: Who's Ben's new [spoiler alert]?

Leave it to Lost to save Ben’s knottiest twist for last: Sources confirm to me exclusively that next month, the show’s enigmatic puppeteer will find himself mixed up in a most unlikely romance.

“It comes out of nowhere,” says one insider, declining to reveal whether Cupid strikes Ben on the island or in the “sideways” world. “I don’t think anyone will see it coming.”

Then again, as Lost speeds toward its May 23 series finale, it has started to seem as if Cupid is targeting just about everyone. Last week, there was Desmond-Penny’s swoonworthy follow-up to Season 4’s “The Constant,” and next week’s Hurley-centric outing features the return of Cynthia Watros as his ill-fated crush, Libby.

Of course, with great love comes even greater heartbreak. I hear there’s an episode late in the season that will go down as one of the show’s deadliest ever.

Ausiello: It’s not completely accurate to say there are no series regulars in it. It would be more accurate to say it’s really light on series regulars. As far as why, let’s just say it’s a big mythology episode and leave it at that.

Question: Got some scoop for you: Neil Patrick Harris will play the live action lead in The Smurfs movie. Since I got you some scoop, how about some Lost scoop in return? —Antonio

Ausiello: Thanks for keeping me plugged-in, Antonio. Here’s your Lost scoop: If you’re expecting the Sawyer/Kate/Jack triangle to move front and center during these final 10 episodes, it may be time to start managing those expectations. “We’re moving into the endgame of the show [and] the stakes have moved beyond, ‘Who’s Kate going to pick?’ and into, ‘Is anyone going to be left alive?,’ says executive producer Damon Lindelof. “I hope [viewers are] going to be satisfied with what we’re doing, but we’re not writing a romance novel here. I understand in seasons past how that was much more relevant. We’re not neglecting it, but there’s a lot of fish to fry. The elements of the love triangle — Kate’s relationship with Jack, her relationship with Sawyer, Sawyer’s relationship with Juliet, who’s dead — are a huge part of the season. All that stuff is in play.”

Question: Will we find out why Richard doesn’t age on Lost? —Julie

Ausiello: Yes. The big reveal occurs in the March 23 Richard-centric episode. And if you think you know the answer, think again. “I definitely had a number of theories about why he doesn’t age and I was dead wrong,” confesses Nestor Carbonell, who adds that the episode is unconventional in that “the ‘A’ story focuses on the origins of this character. There’s a little bit of stuff on the island, but not much. It [mostly] deals with the past.”

The answer is “yes” to the following: Will Richard and Ilana exchange some words soon? Will we see another painting by Bender? Do some of the characters’ last names have significance, particularly Jack’s? Is Jack married to someone we’ve met before? Was Jacob telling the truth when he said someone was coming to the island? Will we learn more about Hurley and Libby’s connection? Will we see Vincent and Charlie again? Will we learn if Desmond was really on the plane?

The answer is “no” to the following: Will we get a conclusion to the story of Ben’s love, Annie? Do the purple circles in Bender’s mural mean anything? Did Juliet’s ex-husband get killed by a smoke bus? Will there be a DVD release of the show in chronological order?

The answer is “maybe” to the following: Will the Hurley bird be explained? Will we see Walt again?

The answer is “no comment” to the following: Will we learn why women can’t have babies on the island?

Ausiello: I can’t tell you very much. Cynthia Watros, however, describes her onscreen reunion with Jorge Garcia as “so sweet and honest. And I think, hopefully, when people see our scenes that they’ll get that feeling, too. [Libby and Hurley] are so incredibly real with each other. I was really grateful that I got to play those scenes and Libby got to sort of express herself in ways that she hasn’t been able to.”

Exclusive: 'Lost' retains 'L.A. Law' alum Sheila Kelley

Actress-turned-erotic exercise pioneer Sheila Kelley has found a plum role on the final season of Lost, sources confirm to me exclusively.

Kelley — best known acting-wise for her three-year stint as secretary Gwen Taylor on L.A. Law — will play the recurring role of Kendall, an intellectual beauty with a sharp edge to her wit who is caught committing corporate espionage and has to lie her way out.

At least that’s the info Team Sneakmeister Darlton circulated around town when they were casting the role. For all I know Kelley is replacing an AWOL Mira Furlan as Rousseau.

My opinion : ok what does it mean ? why we know for epi 6x06 before all centrics ? Let's me remind you the past years and darlton"s choice. If darlton said it to ausiello and not about epi 6x01,6x02,6x03,6x04 or even 6x05 you can bet this episode will be a BIG episode for kate !
Maybe related to Claire and Aaron, Maybe related to kate's love life (a little resolution in the air ?) who can know yet ! but think of the way promotion started on the past and WHICH episodes darlton wanted us to know at first and you'll see WHY i think it :)

Hiroyuki Shimosawa joins season 6

Super-famous Japanese actor Hiroyuki Shimosawa — best known stateside for his roles in The Last Samurai and Rush Hour 3 — is joining the sixth and final season of Lost, sources confirm to me exclusively.

Who’s Shimosawa playing? Beats the hell out of me. I squeezed every last one of my moles for deets and the only thing I came up with is that it’s a “significant recurring” role. Sounds like a case for Doc Jensen…

“My prediction,” says D.J., “is that he will play a mystical mystery man who serves as John Locke’s Obi-Wan-meets-Mr. Miyagi in the post-Jughead rebooted Lost timeline. Attuned to The Island’s magic — perhaps an embodiment of The Island itself — Hiroyuki’s character will help the amnesiac Locke rediscover his destiny to become The Island knight/protector and guide him back, even as dark forces conspire to stop Locke and the rest of the castaways from going back.”

Yeah, I suspected as much.

This is the second major piece of season 6 Lost casting to break this week. On Wednesday, it was announced that Deadwood’s John Hawkes had been tapped to play Lennon, the “scruffy, edgy, charismatic spokesperson/translator for the president of a foreign corporation.”

The first official piece of new casting for Lost’s sixth and final season has arrived — and it’s surprisingly detailed. Team Darlton is looking for an actor in his mid 30s to late 50s to play…

Lennon: Scruffy, edgy, charismatic, and slightly stir-crazy, Lennon can be deferential when it’s called for. He’s the spokesperson/translator for the president of a foreign corporation. He’s a wily negotiator, and far more powerful than his lowly position would seem to indicate. Recurring.

John Hawkes, best known for playing Sol Star in HBO’s Deadwood, has been cast in the final season of ABC’s Lost, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Hawkes will reportedly play a character named Lennon, who — as EW told you earlier — is “the spokesperson/translator for the president of a foreign corporation,” as well a “wily negotiator [who's] far more powerful than his lowly position would seem to indicate.” Lost will return for its sixth and final season in early 2010.

Ausiello: May's series finale is going to be a real downer, predicts Michael Emerson. "I don't think Lost will have a happy ending," he confessed to us at the Saturn Awards. "It's the end and I think we are going to start seeing more casualties. I would put money on major characters being killed. I believe it will be a sad ending to the show -- or at least bittersweet. I think it will definitely be a series finale for grownups." Emerson, meanwhile, is still trying to make sense of the season 5 finale. (Join the club!) "I killed Jacob... maybe... probably," he hedged. "It isn't like we haven't seen plenty of other people be killed and somehow come back. And what does it mean if I did kill him? I Who the hell was he anyway? Obviously, Ben wanted a father. So much of our show is about bad fathers. It is one of our biggest themes. And Jacob disappointed in those final moments. How very sneaky of you, ABC.

I just found out why Dominic Monaghan is appearing in ABC's new promo campaign, and it has nothing whatsoever to do with Charlie being resurrected on Lost next season. But that's exactly what the network wants folks to think. Why? Because they're trying to keep under wraps the real reason he was playing table soccer with Patrick Dempsey, Courteney Cox, and Ed O'Neill in that clip.

This is the part where I warn you of an incoming spoiler and give you one last chance to bail before continuing on...

Okay, here it goes: The real reason Monaghan is featured in that cheeky spot is because he's actually joining the cast of another hour-long ABC drama series as a full-time series regular. And the net's brass want it to be a surprise.

A big surprise.

As a result, they've kindly asked me not to ID the show he'll be joining. And, being the understanding and cooperative creature that I am, I very reluctantly obliged.

The fact is, assuming it doesn't leak elsewhere, it will be a neat surprise.

Question: I miss Claire on Lost. Emilie de Ravin is such a great actress. Will she be back for all of next season? --Kelly
Ausiello: Yes! After sitting out last season, de Ravin will return as a full-time series regular for Lost's sixth and final season, Team Darlton confirms. "Damon and I are very excited to bring Claire back to the show," says Carlton Cuse, "and even more excited for people to experience just how she will return." And even more exciting that that? Experiencing Doc Jensen's theory on how she'll return. Take it away, DJ:

"Any scenario that brings Claire back to Lost must address the mysterious circumstances of her disappearance at the end of season 4, in which many of us were led to believe that she was as dead -- or rather, undead -- as the Ghost Christian that's been haunting The Island since season 1. So here's one thought: Juliet changed time in the season finale by detonating Jughead, and season 6 will tell the story of the new timeline, one in which Claire is alive. Another thought: In light of the revelation that John Locke was actually a supernatural impostor for half of season 5, perhaps in season 6, we'll get a storyline in which Claire just emerges out of the jungle, with no memory of what happened to her -- just like season 1 -- and we and the castaways will be left to wonder: Is this the real Claire or another impostor infiltrating them a la Locke?
