Naveen Andrews Teases Lost's Return: Sayid Will Surprise You!

What's there to be said/recapped that hasn't been said/recapped in the past 200-plus days since Lost served up that terrifically twisty flash-forward-filled finale? But at long last, instead of merely speculating about what happens next, who else will get off the island and what Not Penny's Boat really wants, the action will continue with the arrival of the Season 4 opener tonight at 9 pm/ET on ABC. TVGuide.com invited Naveen Andrews to preview the "constantly surprising" episodes to come.

TVGuide.com: Has it been particularly disappointing for the Lost cast members to have seen this season cut short by the strike, seeing as the show had this great momentum going?
Naveen Andrews: Yeah, but I think it's probably worse for people who had just started a [brand-new TV] show. If this were the first season, it would be utterly disastrous, but we do have a solid fan base and we do have three seasons behind us, so it's a little different.

TVGuide.com: As I was preparing for this interview, I rewatched the season finale and I was disappointed to be reminded that there was precious little Sayid in it.
Andrews: Oh, that's kind of you to say so!

TVGuide.com: Can we expect a reverse in that trend? Does he figure largely in the new season?
Andrews: He's featured quite heavily, yeah. So maybe that is a change.

TVGuide.com: And Episode 3 is Sayid-centric, right?
Andrews: It is, yes.

TVGuide.com: Last we saw Sayid, he was on the beach with Bernard and Jin, and they had just been saved from execution at the hands of the Others. How quickly do they rejoin with the rest of the castaways?
Andrews: Well, so much of this show is about coming together and splitting apart again, for various reasons.... I guess you could say the camp splits again. And by the time you get to Episode 3, the split is kind of clearly defined.

TVGuide.com: Does Sayid have a strong opinion on the possible rescuers?
Andrews: Yes, he's heavily involved in that. What excited me about Season 4 as opposed to what the character got to do in Season 3 is that he's actually sort of pushing the story forward again, which just from an acting point of view is infinitely more interesting and rewarding. Also, you get to see that some characters get off the island. I can't say whether one of them is me or not, but.... [Laughs] It's just so difficult to talk about it without revealing too much....

TVGuide.com: It's kind of funny that we just heard an airplane.
Andrews: Over the ocean here in Los Angeles, yes! But I will say that you get to see a whole new side of Sayid that even I would have never expected. They have taken a huge leap, and it is constantly surprising. I think Season 4 is a huge improvement, to be honest.

TVGuide.com: The Internet is abuzz with talk of "the Oceanic Six," which allegedly refers to a group of people who ultimately make it off the island. If the Six, whatever and whoever they are, do exist, is it sort of disappointing that that leaked already?
Andrews: Well, I think it's inevitable, because you also saw a flash-forward that involved [Jack] and [Kate]. So you know who two of them are.

TVGuide.com: After seeing the finale, did the cast this season become especially anxious to see who got a flash-forward and thus "survives" the island?
Andrews: I can't deny that, no! [Laughs] A show like Lost, with so many deaths, shall we say, keeps actors on their toes and constantly anxious about whether they will be alive or not. But quite honestly, just because you're seen in the future doesn't necessarily mean that you're going to stay on the show. It's not a guarantee of life after death... if you see what I mean.

TVGuide.com: Some may argue that seeing people alive in the future undercuts the dramatic tension, but just because someone gets off the island doesn't mean that's the end of the story.
Andrews: Absolutely not, no. You're spot-on.

TVGuide.com: For all we know, Jack proceeds to go back to the island after the flash-forward we saw.
Andrews: Yeah. And he certainly seems to be on the point of doing so!

TVGuide.com: Any new possible love interests for Sayid?
Andrews: Oh, yeah. Yeah. You will see that. Again, that took me by surprise.

TVGuide.com: With some new characters coming on, Sayid might find a new ally in Rebecca Mader or....
Andrews: Or otherwise, in other dimensions... without getting too specific. Who knows? [Chuckles]

TVGuide.com: What's next for you, outside of Lost?
Andrews: There were two films that I was going to do — we all make our plans, and the plan was that we would finish the entire season in February and then be free to do movies. But those movies have been affected by the strike as well.

TVGuide.com: At what point do you simply not shoot any more episodes for this season? When would the strike have to be resolved for you to get back to work, versus production going on hiatus until, like, the summer?
Andrews: Well, I would have thought the end of February. That's just my opinion. If it goes on past February, maybe [the hiatus] you are suggesting will take place.

TVGuide.com: Do we get any bonus Naveen Andrews in the Grindhouse: Planet Terror DVD?
Andrews: [Laughs] I was given a copy, and it's supposedly got extra stuff in it. That movie, working with those two [Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez], was a very different experience. They're in charge, they shoot when they want to and how they want to. In the case of Robert, he actually edits the film as he shoots it. That experience was a helluva lot of fun. It looks hilarious, and that's how it was shooting it.

The final entry in our series of Lost on-set interviews is with Josh Holloway. As bad boy con artist Sawyer, he's the guy some fans love to hate, and other fans just love. Sawyer has made quite the journey over the first three seasons, making enemies, possibly finding love with Kate (Evangeline Lilly), and exacting revenge on the man who he deemed responsible for the death of his parents. What does season 4 of Lost have in store for Sawyer?

On his set visit to Hawaii in October, BuddyTV contributing writer Jon Lachonis sat down with the charming Southern boy to learn his thoughts on where his character is going in the new season. Continue reading to read the full transcript and listen to the mp3 audio file of the interview.

How is season 4 going for you so far? Do you think there's a lot of new surprises for the fans?

Oh, absolutely. It's truly. . .it truly astounds me still that they can shock us as a cast and completely blow us away, because we of course have been involved with it since the beginning. Though we are on a need to know basis, we have ideas and so forth, and a little more information. But this season has really -- boy, has it gotten concise. Now that they've been able to give an end date to the show there's no more wasting time to elongate the story or whatever. Now it's like razor sharp focus, so hold on to your seats because every episode is bam bam bam. It's really moving the story along.


For Sawyer himself, in season 3 he seemed to develop in the light side and the dark side at the same time. Is that something that will continue in season 4?

Yes. The nature of his character has been that he's constantly battling the good in him versus what he's learned as a defense mechanism pretty much in the world, which is kind of his evil side. This whole character's journey has been a journey to his humanity I feel like, but he has big slips. Last year, when he started killing and just became a killer all of a sudden, it was disturbing to him as well. I think he's kind of hit the wall with the threats of these other people, with the threats of the island, with the never knowing if he's getting off, not knowing if he wants to get off, he don't even know anymore. But he hit the wall last year, like enough of these people, and that killer came out.

In season 4, he's kind of backpedaling a little bit. I think in his own psyche and his whole make up he's trying to not go to the dark side. It's that fine line constantly with his character, and I think he scares himself sometimes. This time he's not really. . .on the outside he's not showing that he cares about that or other people's judgments, but he does, and he realized he overstepped something within himself. That's gonna take some working out, and hopefully he won't go fully to the dark side, but we'll see. I'm open, whichever way they want to go, it's just fun to walk the line. I love walking the line.


As far as your career outside of Lost, has the new shooting schedule and the reduced demands of that opened new opportunities for you?

Well, it's kind of hard to tell right now because of the impending strike. We thought we were going to have all this time to possibly pursue some movies, but the problem is that they're moving production up. All the movies that would have gone normally in March, go now in December or January because they're trying to get production beginning before the strike's in. So I don't know, it's all up in the air right now, but yes, theoretically, yes. We would have a lot more time to pursue other options, which really I'm looking forward to. As an actor, I love doing this job, I love Sawyer. But I'm an actor, I want to explore some other things. In that limited pocket before, it's very difficult to find a role that you can do during that pocket and that is the right role to do. Now, getting in the movie business is like playing chess. You make the wrong moves early on, you're done. Now I've made some mistakes, I've learned from them, and I'm being patient and waiting. Doing a lot of auditioning, a lot of meeting people, so we shall see.


With the new people on the island, has that moved the threats away from being centered on the island? Is everything on the outside now, or are there still issues to deal with on the island itself in the new season?

Both. Both, definitely. The new people arriving just opens the story up even bigger. It doesn't go one direction or the other, one doesn't isolate or cancel the other out. They're brilliant [the writers], they timed it perfectly. So they add another dynamic pretty much, and also the dynamic of are we getting off? Are we not? Let me see, what did you guys see last time? You know that Naomi dropped in, you know her.


Yep, and we know that someone on the freighter named Minkowski–

Okay, so you got the freighter. It's gonna blow your mind, I'm not kidding you, where this goes. These people, the arrival of these other people I guess, is the beginning of the intertwining of the story. It's all gonna come together, they're a major part of it too. You're just not gonna believe it.


Would you go as far as to say that they're connected to the island?

That I'm not quite sure yet. I don't really know, honestly from what I've gotten so far, how involved they are or how connected they are personally. Are they just a tool? I don't know. I don't know if they know exactly what their part is too, but that could also be a reveal later. As for the rest of it, I can't really tell.

When she talks about the scene in The Brig she says, "We did this scene and there was such an immediate and undeniable sense of love, intimacy, and comfort that was there between Kate and Sawyer in that scene, that did not have to be worked for by Josh and me. It's a given. I feel I can't play a scene w/ Sawyer w/out the intimacy."

Then she talks about Catch-22 and says originally the first scene w/ Sawyer coming into her tent was supposed to be played with Kate being colder and brushing him off more, but they changed that. Then (and this is confusing), she says "At the end of the scene when he basically implies she just wants to have sex (she must be referring to the "you don't have to use me" part), Kate loves him and she is confused."

Not that I know of, but we do learn a lot more about Juliet's romantic past, as well as meet one of Sayid's lady friends. The ladies love Sayid, what can I tell you?

Mike in London: Some people claim you can see the parachutist—who was seemingly killed by Locke at the end of season three—alive and well in the trailer. So, did she survive or not?
She's mostly dead. (Think Princess Bride: "It just so happens that your friend here is only mostly dead. There is a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Mostly dead is slightly alive...") But her being mostly dead doesn't mean we're done with her story. There's at least one mystery about Naomi left to solve.

Jane in Los Angeles: I'm dying to know what's in store for Desmond in season four. Do you know anything?
Look for more trouble from Desmond's rotten almost father-in-law. I talked to Alan Dale at the SAGs, and he's back as Charles Widmore in two of the first eight episodes of Lost this season. He told me, "I can tell you that I continue to be an absolute asshole to Desmond. I love that they keep coming up with ways I can do that. But Henry's [Ian Cusick] a lovely guy, and I enjoy doing that show." No matter how much I begged, Alan wouldn't divulge the other ep he's guesting on. Got a good guess? Post it in the Comments!

I worked as an extra on Lost for the 8th episode of the upcoming 4th season,and I can confirm that it is a Michael-centric episode that takes place between the time he left up until present time on the island. I was one of the extras in NY where Michael ends up and meets Tom. On the set there was a lot of talk about how Tom could be there and there were the theories of the Orchid going around.

New season of ABC's 'Lost' found Thursday, with new struggles to flee island

NEW YORK - Are the island castaways of "Lost" mere hours from rescue? Or will their latest chance at freedom turn to dust, like all the others?

That's a no-brainer. The title of the ABC series isn't "Found." And as the long-awaited new season of "Lost" begins Thursday (9 p.m. EST on CTV), the first episode strongly suggests the castaways are about to lose again.

They're awaiting help from a rescue party from a freighter anchored offshore. But as they wait, the chilling likelihood takes hold that their potential saviors could instead spell their doom.

There are no shockers in the episode, the first of eight in the series' truncated fourth season. But this is a gripping hour involving all the principal characters that sets the stage for the season ahead. And after eight long months' absence, it's a welcome sight. (Relax: No spoilers ahead.)

From last season's finale, we already know that rock star Charlie (played by Dominic Monaghan) made a perilous quest to disable a jamming device that had prevented the group from summoning help from a just-acquired satellite telephone. He died carrying out his mission, but not before relaying a warning to his comrades to beware of the so-called freighter people.

The next step in the rescue plan was for the group to make a trek to the radio tower and shut off a tape-loop rescue plea that also was interfering with any other transmissions.

There Ben (Michael Emerson), the less-than-trustworthy overlord of the Others, implored Jack (Matthew Fox), the survivors' reluctant leader, not to place the call to the freighter people.

Jack sneered at Ben's words. The call was made and the new episode begins, much as last season's finale did, with Jack somewhere in the future - drinking. With this recently added flash-forward storytelling feature, Jack is seen in his Los Angeles kitchen mixing a morning cocktail when his eye falls on TV coverage of police in hot pursuit of a speeding motorist.

The car crashes and the driver is arrested. Jack realizes it's one of his fellow former castaways, who is haunted by the past and sees visions of the dead. Jack, who himself is plagued by substance abuse,unrequited love for Kate (Evangeline Lily), and other demons, pays this person a visit. There is mention of a dreaded secret they share.

In a scene back on the island (and back in time), the portly Hurley (Jorge Garcia) runs into Locke (Terry O'Quinn), who long ago had "gone native" and has no desire to ever leave the island.

"It's gonna be hard to talk (Jack) into thinking they're not coming here to rescue us," says Hurley, who, with Locke, shares Ben's alarm for what the freighter people might do.

"We're just gonna have to try our best," says Locke, "because if we can't talk him out of it, then Charlie died for nothing."

By the end of the hour, the castaways are split into two factions - those aligned with Ben and Locke who believe the freighter people represent a mortal threat and Jack's group, still holding out hope for rescue, even as they start to fear the worst.

Thursday's new episode will be preceded by "Lost: Past, Present & Future," a recap hour of the saga of the Oceanic flight 815 crash (8 p.m. EST). And Wednesday, last season's splendid two-hour finale will be repeated (9 p.m. EST on ABC) in "enhanced" form, with on-screen text containing commentary and clues.

In short, "Lost" fans should be rejoicing. And even with just eight episodes currently on tap thanks to the writers strike, ABC has promised another 40 will eventually follow, leading up to the series' finale in 2010.

Lost Season 4 Premiere “Beginning of the End” Reviewed

Nearly nine months ago Lost closed it’s third season in as nail biting of a place as it had ever closed a season. The survivors had made contact with a nearby force that could either bring rescue, or devastation, depending on who you ask; yet a glimpse into the future planted the notion that rescue may not be all it is cracked up to be, particularly for a despondent drug addicted Dr. Jack whose final words from the future were “We have to go back!”

What will the new people be like? Will Desmond get back to shore in time to warn them that it is “not Penny’s boat”? Will the show return to flashbacks, and if not will the flash forwards pick up from Dr. Jack’s pleas or will we get thrown for yet another temporal loops. Speaking of ‘temporal,’ what about that weird “Orchid Orientation” video that was shown at Comic Con? Without a doubt, “Through the Looking Glass” created the most forward momentum of any season closer to date, and with the end date announced there was a lot of anticipation over where season 4 would begin, where it would go, and how fast would it get there.

As a long time fan of the series, I was a little concerned about how the Lost writer’s room would deal with getting the characters back together, address the death of Charlie, introduce the newbies, and still leave enough slack to reconnect with the mysteries of the island including ‘Jacob.’ I soon found out that this fear was entirely unfounded.

The wisdom culled from three seasons worth of exposure to Lost’s alchemy are of no use here. While some things are as expected, Jack is still over confident, Ben is still sneaky, and Locke is still, well, Locke, the execution of the plot around them is all new, done with a serious score to settle with all the critics that kvetch about Lost’s “tease and deny” strategy.

As premieres go, “Beginning of the End” is nothing that Lost fans will expect. Instead of opening with a disorienting locale and characters we don’t know, Beginning of the End begins with a headlong slam into a fast moving vignette with characters we know very well. Instead of taking three or four episodes to address the splintered ranks of the Losties, all of the characters are addressed. Perhaps best of all, instead of servicing a single item like previous premieres, “Beginning of the End” does a remarkable job of tying up much of the overlapping issues from the latter quadrant of season 3 and an even better job of setting the pace for season four.

What you really want to know is what happens though, right? Well as of right now you have a little more than ten days to learn that answer for yourself, but what I will tell you is that virtually every theme that becomes important within the first quarter (assuming 16 episodes) of the season are introduced here in complete, well paced, easy to digest nuggets that have the strange effect of swelling within your consciousness and leaving you with the feeling that you have watched not one, but maybe three or four episodes of what you remember Lost to be.

“Beginning of the End” is a crushingly emotional, action packed introduction to the Lost story, proving that four seasons in – when you might expect to see the light at the end of the tunnel begin to fade – Lost’s groundbreaking protean form still has plenty of blinding ways to dazzle and entertain in a way that is none-the-less unique unto itself.

"Lost" star finds creepy role satisfying

He’s the most menacing, manipulative character on network television.

As leader of the so-called “Others,” Ben Linus has been a constant threat and devious adversary to the castaways from Oceanic Flight 815.

But there’s more to Ben then meets the eye, says Michael Emerson, the Shakespearian-trained actor who reprised his Emmy-nominated role when ABC’s “Lost” returned Jan. 31 for its fourth season.

“I think the viewers have an incomplete view of Ben, or a view that’s not quite accurate,” Emerson says. “He may be more than this wicked monster. I think his character will be re-contextualized as the show goes on, and people will begin to regard him as someone who’s more heroic.”

That’s just speculation, though, as Emerson — like the rest of the “Lost” cast — has been left in the dark by the show’s creators on how the popular drama’s final 48 episodes will unfold.

Interviewed at home Jan. 16 as he waited out the Hollywood writers’ strike, Emerson chatted about “Lost’s” status as a pop-culture phenomenon. And yes, his telephone voice sounds as eerie as Ben’s, so imagine that voice as you read along.

Times: Greetings from Western Pennsylvania, where many of us are thrilled about the upcoming season premiere of “Lost.”

Emerson: Yes, I’m excited, too. It’s been so long since we filmed that episode.

Times: How tricky is it for you to slip into or out of character? When the director shouts “Cut!” do you immediately turn back into Michael Emerson, or do you still spend a few moments in that mysterious, creepy Ben mode?

Emerson: I try to make sure I clock out of the job. When you get to be an older actor like I am, continuing to act when the camera is not rolling can put a lot of wear and tear on you. But I’ve always admired those old-time stage actors who can play checkers off to the side until they get their cue line, and then they immediately go on in character.

Times: How much of Ben’s personality was crafted by the writers, and how much is your own input and interpretation?

Emerson: We both just winged it. They knew the person would need to bring a face to this adversity that’s faced on the show.

Times: You joined “Lost” in season two. What were your initial impressions when you first saw the show?

Emerson: We always liked “Lost” in our house. I must say my wife was fanatical about the show, so she was delighted when I got what was supposed to be just a guest part. Of course, she later got a guest role, so we’re quite a “Lost” household.

Times: What impact has the writer’s strike had on season four?

Emerson: We shot eight of the 16 episodes, so there’s half a season in the can. ABC is hoping to complete the season, but if the strike continues, I’d imagine there would reach a point where ABC would have to consider something else.

Times: The producers and writers of “Lost” already have said there are only 48 episodes left and then the show will end. What did you think about that decision?

Emerson: I thought it was a stroke of genius. It’s like a throwdown from the writers to the world. They’re saying, “We’re not here to cash out, we’re going to do this right.”

Times: What’s it like filming “Lost” in Hawaii? Being away from Hollywood and New York, do the actors get a sense that they really are castaways?

Emerson: There is that sort of feeling, yes. It’s beautiful there. And it’s a great job. But I must say it’s also a lonely job. I am far, far from home and my circle of friends and loved ones and my social scene.

Times: Before “Lost,” when people recognized you on the street what role did they remember you from most?

Emerson: They remembered me as a serial killer on “The Practice.” Although the horror movie “Saw” also has a certain following. “Saw” fans are young and often look like gang members or punk-rockers. “The Practice” is an older crowd.

Times: Have you grasped how popular “Lost” is with fans?

Emerson: “Lost” does have a fanatical global following. My wife and I were in Barcelona last year, and I was never recognized by so many people.

Times: Did you see the Internet fan chatter after the episode where Ben insisted that he and “Others” are really the good guys?

Emerson: I think Ben means that.

Times: The last time we saw Ben, he had been bloodied pretty badly by Jack.

Emerson: And there’s more of that to come.

Times: What should viewers brace for when that first new episode airs?

Emerson: They’re going to have some of their hopes dashed. And they’ll be introduced to new and even scarier characters. All those hopes for getting rescued are going to get a lot more complicated. Oh, and there will be the added treat of us operating in three different time zones now; the present, past and future. The stuff in the future is really incredible.

Times: We saw a glimpse of that in the final minutes of last season’s finale.

Emerson: Yes, that scene with Kate and Jack sets up a whole new part of the show.

Times: Why is “Lost” moving from Wednesday nights to Thursdays?

Emerson: ABC is trying to capitalize by placing us in the time slot of “Grey’s Anatomy,” which has run out of new episodes. And that also moves us away from “American Idol.”

Times: What other projects are you working on later in the year?

Emerson: I hope to get back on the stage, though with the writer’s strike I don’t know what’s going to happen. We might be working on “Lost” instead.

Times: Is it true that the “Lost” cast has no idea where the storyline is ultimately headed?

Emerson: That is absolutely correct.
